This trek
takes you through some amazing terrain the
highlights being Chopta, Tungnath and of
course Chandrashila Peak itself. Chopta, Known
as the "Switzerland of India", Chopta at an
altitude of 2600 m, offers a breathtaking view
of the majestic Himalayan peaks against the
backdrop of clear blue skies. With bugyals
(high altitude meadows) all around, it is one
of the best camping sites in Garhwal. Also,
the sunset as seen from Chopta is a sight one
can travel any distance to see.
Tungnath
Temple, at an altitude of 3,680 mt, is the
highest Shiva shrine among the Panch
Kedars. From here one can view the Bandar
Poonch, Kedar, Chaukhamba and Dunagiri peaks,
amongst others. The trek to Tungnath is
abundant with rich flora and fauna, with one
passing through many a grassy slope. And what
could be said of the summit. From
CHANDRASHILLA PEAK (3950 M) one gets a 180
degrees view of the Himalayas that seem to be
within arm's length. Words cannot describe
this sight... it has to be seen to be
believed!!!
Chandrashila
summit is a popular trek that can be
undertaken round the year except during the
peak winters of the months of December &
January due to heavy snowfall and
inaccessibility to the area, Chandrashila
summit is a rock face above the temple of
Tungnath, the highest of all the temples in
the Himalayas. It is a short but rigorous hike
beyond the temple. The Chandrashila summit
affords the most beautiful view of the
Nandadevi, Trishul, Kedar Peak and Chaukhamba
peaks.
During a clear, cloudless day, one can get the
feeling of sitting on a sea of mountains. So
start early in the morning and you might be
able to catch a clear sky. The Oak forest
through which the trek route traces its path
to the summit abounds in wildlife, especially
foxes, pheasants, musk deer, and leopards. But
it is safe, as the animals keep away from the
trail. We begin at Chopta, which is one of the
most mesmerizing alpine meadows in Garhwal
Himalayas; what's more, it also offers
excellent camping opportunities. This makes
hiking and walking in this region quite
special. And if we're here in the month of
March, there are good chances that as we climb
from Ukhimath to Chopta we may get the rare
opportunity to see Rhododendron flowers in
shades varying from crimson-red to bright
white.
